Migrant Working Group reveals international migration situation in Thailand
BANGKOK, Dec 16 (TNA) – The Migrant Working Group (MWG) reported the international immigration situation in Thailand as it held a seminar on the country’s management of international immigration prior to the United Nations’ International Migrants Day to be observed on Dec 18.
The event was held at the Thai Journalist Association on Friday.
MWG coordinator, Adisorn Kerdmongkol disclosed five main migration circumstances in Thailand this year, including the 2016 policy on migrant labour system, Thailand's upgraded standing in Trafficking in Persons (TiP) report, the Rohingya issue, Myanmar’s State Councillor Aung San Su Kyi’s visit to Thailand and foreign worker protection.
The seminar also discusses several issues of interest such as rights of fisheries workers, which is one of the national agenda of the current government, protection and welfare of domestic workers.
Other options for management of displaces persons at temporary shelters along Thai-Myanmar border were also discusses as well as the violence in Rakhine which could force more Rohingya to seek refuge in Thailand. (TNA)
