5.3 Magnitude Quake Jolts Bengkulu

Jakarta, Oct 3 (ANTARA) - A 5.3-magnitude undersea earthquake shook Bengkulu province early Wednesday but did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The epicenter of the quake which struck at 00.37 a.m. local time was 29 km northwest of North Bengkulu or 654 km northwest of Jakarta at a depth of 105 km, the agency said in its official website. Bengkulu is quite prone to earthquakes. On June 4, 2000, an earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter Scale rocked the province, killing more than 100 people.
