80 Per Cent Of Malaysian Drug Mules Are Men

By Norazurra Aziz KUALA LUMPUR, March 29 (Bernama) -- About 80 per cent of Malaysians who were found to be involved in activities as drug mules were men, according to a report by the Consular Division of Wisma Putra. Special Officer to the Deputy Foreign Minister, Neow Choo Seong said the report revealed that men formed the biggest group as drug mules compared to women who only constituted 20 per cent. "When talking about drug mules, we will normally think that women will become the victims after being trapped in a love affair or trying to go for comfort. "But men are also not exempted and in fact form the biggest group of those involved," he told Bernama after giving a talk at a Seminar on Public Awareness on Drug Mules (SEDARLAH) at Masterskills University College of Health Science, here on Thursday. Neow said most of the men did not become victims or were duped by anyone but they knew what they were carrying. He said what the ministry could do to assist victims who were detained abroad was to make consular visits to the detention centres or prisons, seek legal aid by giving an assurance that the trial would be fair. "The ministry is also responsible for ensuring that the human rights of Malaysians are also protected under the local and international laws," he added. -- BERNAMA
