Anti-narcotic operations intensified during Songkran festival

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) -- The commander of the Third Army Region has ordered serious anti-narcotic operations in the North to curb drug trafficking during the Songkran festival and more checkpoints are among his measures. Drug smuggling through the North to other region in the country was increasing and each seizure covered up to a million speed pills and tens of kilograms of crystal methamphetamine or “ice”, Third Army commander Lt Gen Wichak Siribansop said. Increased checkpoints by soldiers and police might have impacts on traffic, especially Bangkok-bound traffic that was expected to rise after April 14 and 15, he said. The commander said that many young people were acting like tourists and trafficking drugs from the North. He warned the parents and the youth that authorities were aware of their movements as information on drug trafficking was not secret and traffickers were always ready to betray colleagues. (TNA)
