Aomsin dies of blood poisoning

BANGKOK, March 21 (TNA) -- The turtle known as Aomsin, literally meaning Piggy Bank, has died, after suffering for months, the story serves as a reminder for everyone to be kind to animals in the right way. Dean of the Veterinary Faculty of Chulalongkorn University Vet Roonroj Thanawongnuvej, together with Director of the Marine Animals Research Centre Vet Nantarika Chansue, and member of the faculty's surgery department Vet Pasakorn Pruksawan gave a joint press conference earlier this morning to inform the public of the 25-year-old turtle's death due to blood poisoning. The amphibian had undergone the second surgery on March 18 to relieve the problem of strangling intestine after almost a 1,000 coins were removed from her stomach last week, leaving a large gap within her tummy causing her intestine to become strangled up and block the blood flow. The acute infection in her intestine then caused blood infection. During the emergency operation on Monday, the turtle's breathing became too slow, prompting the veterinarians to stimulate her with injections but failed. The story, once again, serves as a reminder of human neglect, though the throwing of the coins into the pond for good luck was never meant to kill any living creature. The carcass of the famous would later be thoroughly autopsied as a case study, after which her body would be sent to the Sea Turtles Conservation Centre of the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) in Sattahip district of Chon Buri province to be preserved. Vet Pasakorn stressed that the surgeries did not kill Aomsin because if the turtle was left as is, she would have a high risk of dying soon due to the abnormal way in which her intestine was coiling up because of the coins and the state in which her blood was full of heavy metals.
