Archaeological survey launched in Al Seenia

Abu Dhabi, Dec 17, 2012 (WAM) - A major new survey of the important archaeological site Al Seenia, in Umm Al Qaiwain, commenced on Saturday. The project is being undertaken by the National Council of Tourism and Antiquities (NCTA) in order to highlight the heritage of the UAE and its historical civilisation.
The team consists of seven members, including specialists and experts in the field of archaeology, and museums from different emirates across the UAE.
“The project aims to survey the island and determine its contents in addition to conduct practical training to the participated members, acknowledging that some of them are participating for the first time in such a project,” Mohammad Khamis Bin Hareb Al Muhairi, director general of NCTA, said.
Commenting yesterday during a formal ceremony to inaugurate the survey, Al Muhairi added: “Implementing Al Seenia project aims to preserve the country’s heritage and encourage more coordination and cooperation with local administrations in promoting tourism, which plays a significant role in the economic income of the UAE.”
The project has also received much attention from overseas archaeologists because of its importance.
Additionally, the survey team has been provided with all necessary support and modern equipment and techniques. “The survey results will be put on electronic maps and provided to all local authorities within the UAE to recognise the area’s archaeological sites and develop infrastructure projects in the region,” Al Muhairi added.
“Results will also shed light on the history of the region and provide scientific researchers and scholars, within or outside the country, with cultural information,” he added. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
