Bahrain calls for disarmament, international security

New York, Oct. 11 (BNA)-- Bahrain confirmed that the consolidation of peace, security and stability foundations of the world cannot be achieved while there is proliferation of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction that threaten international peace and security. It stated that cementing those foundations requires elimination of nuclear weapons to safeguard human safety.
This was stated in a speech by the Kingdom of Bahrain permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaiei before the Committee on Disarmament and International Security of the General Assembly of the United Nations, on Monday, October 10, 2016.
The Permanent Representative noted the Resolution No. 50/66 on the establishment of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the region of the Middle East and emphasized the need to implement the resolution adopted by the Review Conferences of the Parties to the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons extending the treaty indefinitely, as well as urged all Middle East non -member states of the treaty - without exemption - to accede it, and place all their nuclear facilities under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.
He stressed Bahrain’s stance that urging exertion of robust efforts in order to achieve a Weapon of Mass Destruction and nuclear-weapon free zone in the region of the Middle East including the Arab Gulf States.
Furthermore, the Ambassador affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain supports the implementation of the provisions of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons on all States Parties without prejudice to the inalienable right of States to benefit from nuclear technology and to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination in line with the provisions of Articles I and II of the Treaty.
He also stressed the Kingdom of Bahrain’s commitment to work with Member States to make progress on all issues related to disarmament and international security.
