Bahrain participates in UNSC debate on international peace, security

New York, Aug. 22 (BNA): The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations, Ambassador Faris Jamal Al Ruaie, has participated in a Debate on “Maintenance of international peace and security: Challenges to peace and security in the Middle East”, which was called for by the Republic of Poland, the president of the UN Security Council (UNSC) this month. During the debate, held on Tuesday at the UN headquarters here, the Permanent Representative quoted His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa as saying that the security and stability of the world depend on the free flow of trade and ultimately its security depends on what is happening in this important region. The Ambassador added that the challenges facing the Middle East today are of profound and complex dimensions, requiring the joint efforts and commitment of all countries to the principles of good neighbourliness, mutual respect and non-interference in the internal affairs of countries, to avoid the danger of long-term security destabilisation. Stressing the necessity of combating terrorism and addressing its root causes, he touched on the 11th meeting of the working group to Counter ISIS (Daesh) Finance Group (CIFG), hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain on April 16 -17 this year. The Permanent Representative reiterated Bahrain's firm stance towards the Palestinian cause and its support of the rights of the brotherly Palestinian people to establish their independent state on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, on the basis of a two-state solution and in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and the relevant international resolutions. The Ambassador affirmed the Kingdom of Bahrain's condemnation of the terrorist attack on a natural gas plant in the Shayba oil field and refinery in Saudi Arabia by the Iran-backed Houthi militias in a cowardly terrorist act aimed at destabilising security and stability and posing a grave danger to international energy supplies. In the context of the important role played by the Kingdom of Bahrain in reinforcing security and stability in the region, the ambassador mentioned the important international military meeting hosted by the Kingdom on 31 July 2019. The meeting, he said, was held to discuss the current situation in the region and ways to enhance international cooperation, coordination and consultation to address the repeated attacks and unacceptable practices by Iran and its terrorist groups, which target international maritime security in the waters of the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. He added that the Kingdom will host a meeting on the safety of maritime and air navigation in the coming period this year, in cooperation and partnership with the United States and the Republic of Poland.
