Bahrain signs historic Paris Climate Pact

New York, Apr.23 (BNA): The Kingdom of Bahrain joined nations of the world in signing the historic Paris climate agreement at the UN headquarters in New York. Delegated by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, Personal Representative, Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE) President His Highness Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al-Khalifa attended the signing ceremony, in the presence of world leaders and heads of delegations. HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al-Khalifa signed the pact which aims at reducing the rise of harmful greenhouse gases and carbon emissions that cause global warming. Bahrain was among the first countries to endorse the agreement. The Supreme Council for the Environment (SCE) also represented Bahrain in meetings and workshops which helped shape the international covenant. Addressing the ceremony, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his delight at the history day, hailing the signing and ratification of the pact. He urged the international community to enforce measures which help reduce climatic dangers, protect local communities, make the world safer and smarter and turn the Paris Pact into tangible reality. He said that the historic gathering which included more than 165 countries represented a defining moment for future generations. . The Paris climate agreement aims at keeping global warming below 2 C, to avert detrimental repercussions, including drought, floods, melting glaciers and rising sea levels. The Paris climate pact enters into force thirty days after its ratification by 55 countries accounting for 55 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
