BMA prepares for monsoon season
BANGKOK, June 5 (TNA) -- Workers of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) have cleaned a sewerage system on the outskirt of Bangkok as monsoon season has started in Thailand.
High-ranking BMA officers, led by deputy governor Amorn Kitchawengkul, on Saturday inspected workers cleaning the sewerage pipe between Khlong Bang Na and Soi La Salle, covering a total distance of over three kilometres in preparation for the rainy season.
Mr Amorn said the cleaning is necessary because the canal is situated in low-lying area while new building construction is taking place there which could disrupt the water from flowing into the canal if heavy rain continues several days.
Narong Ruangsri, deputy director of BMA’s Drainage and Sewerage Department, said more than 50 workers along with five trucks used for sucking mud are employed in cleaning sewerage system in the area.
Workers have already dredged more than 90 per cent of canals and cleaning the sewerage system in the capital, said Mr Amorn.
The government has also allocated budget to BMA to build an underground tunnel with the total length of over 300 metres and construction could complete in one year, Mr Amorn said.
Upon completion, it could help relieve flooding problem during the monsoon season in Bangkok. (TNA)
