Book on 16 Years of Danish-Malaysia Cooperation in Environment Launched

KUALA LUMPUR, June 27 (Bernama) -- A book that describes a unique and hugely successful 16-year cooperative effort by Malaysia and Denmark on environmental issues was launched here on Tuesday. Titled "The Cooperation", the 115-page full colour coffee table book was jointly launched by the Royal Danish Embassy and the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister's Department. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Nor Mohamed Yakcop in his speech said the book illustrates how Malaysia, with the support of Danish expertise, addressed the environmental challenges it faced during a period in which Malaysia experienced an unprecedented growth. "This book also illustrates how different ways of thinking come together to address the challenges faced in the environment and sustainable development," he said. Nor Mohamed also hoped that business communities from Malaysia and Denmark would continue supporting the efforts and create new commercial platforms to resolve environmental challenges in the future. Meanwhile, Denmark Ambassador to Malaysia, Svend Waever said the Danish-Malaysia Environmental Cooperation took off in 1994, inspired by the Rio Conference on Global Sustainability, and came to an end in 2010. "This was from the outset the intention with the book. That is, not to teach but to motivate and inspire. We wanted an informative, readable and usable book pointing towards the future based on shared experience," he said. -- BERNAMA
