Dubai Customs foils attempt to smuggle 2.7kg of marijuana

Dubai: Dubai Customs inspectors at the Cargo Village have seized 2.7kg of marijuana in a parcel crossing through Dubai in transit between two Asian countries. Saeed Ahmed Al Tayer, Director of the Department of Air Customs Centres at Dubai Customs, disclosed that the parcel sender attempted to hide the drug in clothing items. He added that when the parcel was passing through the x-ray machine, the inspector suspected something as the x-rays reflected abnormal density in this particular parcel. As a result, the inspector ordered a manual search of the parcel and its contents. During the manual search, a plastic sack filled with herbal seeds was detected inside the parcel. Sniffer dogs used in the search reacted to the parcel and the Dubai Customs' Mobile Laboratory confirmed that the seeds were marijuana. Al Tayer praised the efforts exerted by the Dubai Customs' inspectors to thwart smuggling attempts, noting that such efforts have a positive impact on national security. He added that this seizure is further evidence that drug smugglers and traffickers employ many nefarious means or tricks for quick and illicit gains. Within the scope of continuous and joint coordination between Dubai Customs and the General Department of Anti-Narcotics in Dubai Police, the necessary legal actions were taken. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
