Earthquake awareness and prevention day marked

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ Today, Emergency Management Department of the capital organized a public awareness event on earthquake disaster prevention, introducing people how to ensure safety during earthquakes. A project ‘Disaster Resistant Ulaanbaatar” is being implemented by the capital’s authority together with the World Vision Mongolia and some equipment and tools for earthquake disaster prevention were granted to the project implementing organizations, including the capital’s Departments of Emergency Management; Children and Family development, Education; and Health. “- During earthquakes, temporary shelters are necessary. Therefore, we have established 11 more shelters, making it 33 in total. Also, we have defined 40 gathering points to be used during earthquakes. It is vital that all citizens have knowledge and awareness regarding disaster of earthquake. A project ‘Disaster resistant Ulaanbaatar” is being implemented together with the World vision Mongolia and over 1000 citizens are involved in trainings. Training involvement will be widened further” said P.Bayarkhuu, Deputy Governor of the capital in charge of Infrastructure and Development of Ger districts. In early March, the Government made a decision to mark “Earthquake awareness and prevention day” on every fourth Wednesday of March annually to conduct a nationwide campaign of awareness and training citizens on prevention, risk reduction, preparedness and rescue actions. 55.4 percent of the territory of Mongolia belongs to possible 7-8 magnitude earthquake zone and 19.6 per cent to possible 9 and more magnitude earthquake zone and some 75 per cent of all cities and settlements are located on 7 and more magnitude earthquake zones and 12 soums and settlements on 9 and more magnitude earthquake zones.
