Facebook Must Be Responsible For Pedophile Group: KPAI

Jakarta, March 22 (Antara) - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) has asked Facebook as an internet service provider to also be responsible for the presence of 'Lolly Candy' pedophile group in its service. With contents categorically pornographic and sexual harassment against children, the group has recently come under the spotlight and was reported to the police. It was believed to serve as a medium of information for pedophiles. KPAI Chairman Asrorun Niam said in Jakarta on Tuesday that as 'home' to Lolly Candy group, Facebook could not abdicate responsibility. It should explain who its service users are and what for the service is. "It (Facebook) must have internal patrol to make sure that it is free from matters that are against the law," noted Niam. If negative contents still exist and continue to take place there is the possibility that the social media deliberately ignored such contents. "If the media deliberately ignores such negative contents, it will have legal consequences. Therefore, we will soon summon Facebook to have discussion on child protection," he said. The circulation of negative contents in the social media like Facebook has happened not only once. Recently, there was also a case of child trafficking for prostitution purposes organized through Facebook. Niam said the summons that his side will send to (Facebook) is aimed at preventing the repetition such a case (the presence of a group like the Lolly Candy). There must be collective awareness. "There must be a common awareness. We will invite Facebook and other content providers to build a collective awareness. It should not happen that Facebook and Twitter as providers abdicate responsibilities," Niam said. He also appealed to law enforcers to use existing legal instruments, including implementing the commitment of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) who rated crime against children as an extraordinary crime through the issuance of Law No. 17 Year of 2016 on child protection. "One of the punishments in the law instrument is gelding punishment and death penalty intended to create deterrent effect and to protect children," he said.
