Fake EURO 2012 Jerseys Worth US$157,524 Seized

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- Four days into the Euro 2012 Football championship, 10,000 fake jerseys of participating countries worth US$157,524 (RM500,000) was seized in a raid at Taman Miharja, Cheras, Tuesday. Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism's Kuala Lumpur office deputy director Mohamed Mokhtar Yeop said the 9.30am raid was carried out after two weeks of surveillance on a house in Jalan Galian, following a tip-off. However, he said no arrests were made at the rented house since the owner of the jerseys, imported from China, was not in. He said statements were taken from two men, a caretaker of the store, aged 28, and the younger brother of the owner of the jerseys, in his 30s. "We will find the owner of the business and the owner of the house and will investigate the case under Section 8 (2) Trade Descriptions Act 2011. "If found guilty, an individual can be fined not more than US$3,148 (RM10,000) for each jersey or jail not more than three years. For companies, the fine is not more than US$4,720 (RM15,000) for each jersey," he said at the location of the raid. He said initial investigations revealed that the jerseys seized were meant for distribution to night market traders in the Klang Valley at US$3.14 (RM10) each and would be sold to consumers at between US$12.58 (RM40) to US$15.71 (RM50) each. --BERNAMA
