Freedom of Expression By Social Media Shows A Democratic Process - Information DG

KUALA TERENGGANU (Terengganu, Malaysia), April 13 (Bernama) -- The freedom of expression and opinion offered by the young generation through the social media has created a new instrument and dimension for democratic information. Information Department Director-General Ibrahim Abdul Rahman said the 1Malaysia Social Media Convention would be the best platform for participants, especially social media practitioners, to exchange ideas, information and feedback on issues. "Expressing opinions and views can become better through the social media because the people would be able to know the intended message. However, the freedom of expression and democracy must be within the scope of the law. "This is because the Defamation Act and Sedition Act can still be used against social media practitioners if the social media is used for slander and matters contrary to human norms," he said at the 1Malaysia Social Media Convention here Thursday. Also present were Terengganu Information Director Azizah Awang and secretariat for the convention Mohd Rafi Awang Kechil. The convention held in Terengganu (an east coast state in Peninsular Malaysia) after Kelantan, Pahang and Sabah, was participated by more than 2,000 social media practitioners. -- BERNAMA
