Friends Get Death Penalty For Trafficking Cannabis

GEORGE TOWN (Penang, Malaysia), March 27 (Bernama) -- Two friends were sentenced to death by the Penang High Court here today for trafficking 33.181 grammes of cannabis, five years ago. Judicial Commissioner Mohd Amin Firdaus Abdullah handed down the sentence after concluding that the defence failed to raise a reasonable doubt on the case against Ahmad Zhahril Mohd Hussin, 29, and Nazri Abdul Hamid, 35. Tow truck driver Ahmad and shipping clerk Nazri appeared calm while the sentence was delivered. They were charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 with trafficking the cannabis in front of Pusat Aneka Sukaramai in Taman Sama Gaga, Permatang Pauh at 5 pm on June 22, 2007. The offence is punishable by the mandatory death sentence. DPP Mohd Amril Johari prosecuted and Ranjit Singh Dhillon represented Ahmad and Nazri. -- BERNAMA
