GANHRI Chairperson Meets Deputy UN Secretary-General

Doha, November 07 (QNA) - HE the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah met Monday via video communication technology with Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Group Amina Mohammed. During the meeting, Al Attiyah stressed boosting cooperation and partnership between the GANHRI and the UN to implement the Sustainable Development Goals, and to contribute to the independent human rights-based evaluation to determine progress in the field and address challenges in line with the common agenda issued by the UN Secretary-General. Her Excellency stressed the ability of the GANHRI and national institutions worldwide to support progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in a manner based on human rights principles, saying. This partnership is the best way to build strong and effective national institutions that are compatible with the Paris Principles; It is also a means to make progress in the indicator of national human rights institutions within the framework of the 16th sustainable development goal, and to speak with a unified voice on human rights, Her Excellency said. Her Excellency called for supporting the GANHRI's initiatives aimed at enhancing the participation of national human rights institutions in all pillars of the United Nations, including human rights, peace, security and development, noting that this would enable the UN to listen to the voice of human rights, which is independent and distinct from states and non-governmental organizations. Al Attiyah also hailed the partnership of the GANHRI and its members from among institutions that include 120 institutions around the world with the UN, pointing out that the alliance played an influential and effective role that culminated in providing advice to governments. Human Rights in Geneva succeeded weeks ago in demonstrating the impact of the collective advocacy in the context of adopting a resolution on the role of national human rights institutions in relation to climate change, Her Excellency said. During the meeting, Her Excellency Maryam bint Abdullah Al Attiyah reviewed the GANHRI’s efforts to address some urgent contemporary challenges, and its work to promote human rights-based climate action, noting the launch of the Global Action Plan on Human Rights Defenders and Civic Space, which was designed to empower National human rights institutions and their support, as they in turn need protection as human rights defenders. Al Attiyah recently met with HE UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York. During the meeting, Her Excellency called on Guterres to consider developing a UN strategy on national human rights institutions in partnership with the GANHRI. (QNA)
