GWU, UNDP explore ways to empower UAE woman

Abu Dhabi, Oct 18, 2012 (WAM) - Paolo Lembo, acting United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Coordinator, discussed yesterday with Noura Al Suwaidi, Director of General Women's Union (GWU), a broad range of issues concerning empowerment of women in the UAE. The meeting, which took place during a visit by the UN official to the GWU's premises, also explored ways of UNDP's technical support for the UAE National Strategy for Advancement of Women which seeks to empower woman so as to play a positive role in national development. Al Suwaidi spoke about the GWU's commitment to women's empowerment programmes and adoption of relevant best practices through partnerships with other UN agencies, including the UNDP, which she said, is a major provider of technical support for the GWU. Mr. Lembo said the UAE women enjoy their rights under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and lauded H.H Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU) and of Family Development Foundation (FDF), for her consistent support for UAE woman so as to become an ambitious, modern woman in coping with the UAE indigenous heritage and culture. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
