Identity Documents For 1,000 Undocumented Indians In Kedah

PADANG SERAI (Kedah, Malaysia), April 24 (Bernama) -- About 1,000 Indians have been found to be without MyKad in Kedah (a northern state in Peninsular Malaysia) during a registration exercise conducted by the Special Indian Task Force last year. MyKad is the compulsory identity document for Malaysian citizens aged 12 and above. State MIC Liaison Committee chairman S. Ananthan said the National Registration Department had issued documents to 761 people so far and was processing the documents for the rest. MIC stands for Malaysian Indian Congress is a Malaysian political party and is one of the founding members of the ruling coalition, Barisan Nasional (National Front), that has been in power since the country achieved independence in 1957. "We might have missed a small number who are without MyKad. Indian community leaders and the Federal Village Security and Development Committees will find them and help them get the MyKad," he told Bernama after attending the handing over of 1Malaysia People's Aid at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Keladi here, Tuesday. There are about 46,000 Indians in Kedah. Ananthan took to task opposition leaders for claiming that more than 300,000 Indians nationwide were without identification documents. He said the allegation was merely a publicity stunt. "They should write a novel about their lies," added. -- BERNAMA
