Indonesia Takes All Threats To Embassies Seriously: Spokesperson
Jakarta, May 13 (Antara) -- Indonesia always takes all threats to its embassies abroad seriously, such as the one made to the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, Spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Ministry Arrmanatha Nasir said.
"All threats to our embassies, general consulates and consuls are taken seriously by the Indonesian government. We have a standard operating procedure to face various threats made," Nasir stated during a press briefing at the office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs here on Wednesday.
On Monday, the Indonesian Embassy in Abuja received a letter in which a group that calls itself MOG, which means Men of God, threatened to take serious action if the Indonesian government executes a Nigerian convict on death row again, as was done on April 29.
Nasir added that the threat was reported to the police and investigations are underway.
"The degree of seriousness of the threat is being analyzed, and there are some clues in the letter, such as a return address," he revealed.
According to the ministry spokesperson, the senders of the threat, MOG, mentioned the Indonesian ambassador to Nigeria and a few other diplomatic members of the Indonesian corps.
In the letter, the MOG threatened the Indonesian government of severe action against the embassy and its personnel if they execute any Nigerian again.
The Indonesian Supreme Court executed Nigerian convict on death row Raheem Agabje Salami over a drug trafficking case on Nusakambangan Island, Central Java, in April.
Furthermore, the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, Australia, also received threats, including a package containing white powder, after two Australians, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan, were executed the same day as the Nigerian.
However, the Indonesian government stands firm with regard to enforcing its law while dealing with drug traffickers as the country is facing an emergency situation over narcotics.
According to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), nearly 50 people die every day due to drugs abuse.
