Israeli regime an obstacle to create ME free of nuclear weapons
New York, April 27, IRNA – Iranˈs ambassador and acting permanent representative in the United Nations called the Zionist regime as the sole obstacle in the way of creation of the Middle East free of nuclear weapons.
Gholam-Hossein Dehqani, speaking at the end of the annual meeting of the UN disarmament commission, by referring to the Zionist regime opposition to including the issue of the holding a conference on the Middle East free of nuclear weapons at the final document of the commission, said it is the main reason for failure of this yearˈs meeting, adding that Israel, with this move, showed that not only its nuclear arsenal and hidden nuclear activities and lack of its commitment to international convention in the field of mass destruction weapons is the main obstacle in the way of creating a region free of nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, but its unconstructive policies are also an obstacle in the way of international organizations to support such an issue.
He added that unfortunately such an action of the regime is under the support of western nuclear countries while all these states have important responsibilities in implementation of the resolution for the Middle East free of nuclear weapon.
Dehqani continued that Israel should set aside such policies and join Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and put all its nuclear installations under supervision of the IAEAˈs safeguard body.
He also criticized nuclear countries for not commitment to the obligations concerning nuclear disarmament and said that these countries should fulfill their commitments by good will and allow the talks in this field move successfully forward.
The ambassador also called for immediate start of the nuclear disarmament comprehensive convention and said that compiling and execution of the convention can lead to destruction of all nuclear arsenals and create a world more secure for all nations.
President Hassan Rouhani, on behalf of 120 member states of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) countries, proposed compiling of nuclear arsenal disarmament comprehensive convention on September 2013, which was approved by the UN General Assembly.
