Key project to be launched during BIGS 2016

Manama, Feb. 19 (BNA): The Agricultural Affairs and Marine Resources at the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning will launch, in cooperation with Al-Amin Gardens the largest project to recycle agricultural waste and convert it to organic fertilizers, the "compost", in conjunction with the establishment of the activities during this year’s Bahrain International Gardens Show (BIGS), set to kick off on February 25. The project will unveiled during BRIGS 2016 to be one of the fruits of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) which aims to achieve agricultural development and produce products that are free of chemical material to preserve public health. Undersecretary for Agriculture and Marine Resources Shaikh Khalifa bin Isa Al Khalifa said the ministry and Al-Amin Gardens had held intensive talks to launch the Compost project. He said that compost increases agricultural productivity by 40% and helps protect the environment. Compost is an organic matter that is decomposed and recycled as a fertiliser and soil amendment. Compost is a key ingredient in organic farming. At the simplest level, the process of composting simply requires making a heap of wetted organic matter known as green waste (leaves, food waste) and waiting for the materials to break down into humus after a period of weeks or months. Compost is rich in nutrients. It is used in gardens, landscaping, horticulture, and agriculture.
