Kuala Lumpur to Host UNESCO Chair in Bioethics Seminar in Sept

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- An International seminar of the Unesco Chair in Bioethics, which will be held here on Sept 20 and 21, will delve on various issues on biological research and its applications. Among others, the participants will compare notes plastic surgery, infertility treatment, organ transplant, genetic services, bioinformatic data handling, vulnerable human subjects and the law of war, National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) Dean Faculty of Medicine and Defence Health Maj-Gen Prof Dr Mohd Zin Bidin. The seminar will be organised by the newly set up Malaysian Unit of the Unesco International Network in Bioethics Chair, said Mohd Zin, who is also head of the unit. The Malaysian unit of the Unesco International Network in Bioethics Chair was launched here on Wednesday. UPNM vice-chancellor Lt-Gen Wira Allatif Mohd Noor said the unit would coordinate and stimulate regional and international network in bioethics and promote research in bioethics in the country besides being a referral centre. He said the unit would collaborate with the UPNM in reviewing and developing several ethical related topics and syllabus such as professional ethics and vulnerabilities for doctors and medical students, ethical issues in public health and in dealing with children, and military medical ethics. "In addition, the Malaysian unit had also worked hand in hand with the Malaysian Formula1 Medical Service to inculcate ethical knowledge and practice in motorsport medicine. "Ethical issues related to professional ethics such as patient information and confidentiality were incorporated and practised during the Malaysian Formula1 Grand Prix 2012," he added. -- BERNAMA
