Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair Attracts 1.8 Million Visitors

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 (Bernama) -- The 10-day Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2012, which ended Sunday, has achieved its target of 1.8 million visitors. National Book Development Foundation president Hasan Hamzah said despite teething problems, this year's achievement matched that of last year. "The organiser and book publishers are happy with visitors' turnout and the sales of books. Despite the internet boom, the sale of books does not seem to have dampened," he told Bernama as the fair comes to a close. Meanwhile, the highlight of the final day of the fair was the launch of a poetry anthology, 'Balada Pyanhabib' published by Institut Terjemahan dan Buku Malaysia (ITBM) by cartoonist Mohammad Nor Khalid or Lat. In his speech, Mohammad Nor said the anthology featured writer Pyanhabib Rahman's poems and anecdotes on people for over 40 years. ITBM managing director Mohd Khair Ngadiron said he was glad that the anthology, which included images of Pyanhabib, came to fruition after he persistently persuaded Pyanhabib to publish his works for the past three years. Mohd Khair said ITBM would be uncovering Anak Alam members to pen their experience in various literature genres, theatre and painting. Set up in 1974, Anak Alam is a splinter of Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung with artist Abdul Latiff Mohidin as one of its founders. ITBM is a limited company established by the government of Malaysia with the aim of elevating the translation industry in the country. -- BERNAMA
