Labour minister to visit Samut Sakhon tomorrow
BANGKOK, Feb 1 (TNA) - Labour Minister Sirichai Distakul is scheduled to visit Samut Sakhon, the center of the fishery industry center on Thursday to follow up the implementation of the government’s policies on regulating and managing migrant workers.
During his tomorrow’s visit, the minister will listen to problems and suggestion from related agencies and private sector at the Samut Sakhon city hall.
He will also give work guidelines for heads of labour offices in Sanut Sakhon, Samut Songkram, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chachoengsao and Samut Prakarn on the whole system of migrant worker management, granting e-work permits and planned residential zoning of migrant workers.
Later in the afternoon, the minister will visit Baan Eua Arthorn low-cost housing unit in the provincial seat, where employers are urged to bring migrant workers to live. He will be briefed about the residential zoning before he will go to Thai Union Manufacturing Co, Ltd, canned seafood producer and exporter.
Currently, there are about 2.6 million migrant workers in Thailand. About half or 1.3 million people are legal laborers and the rest are in the process to have their nationalities verified by their respective countries during the lenient period.
Samut Sakhon alone accommodates about 300,000 migrant workers, most of them are Myanmar workers. (TNA)
