Langkawi Fishermen Receive Additional Allocation Of RM12 Million This Year

LANGKAWI (Kedah, Malaysia), April 21 (Bernama) -- Langkawi fishermen received an additional allocation of RM12 million (US$3.91 million) for fish and 'trepang', a species of sea cucumber (gamat), breeding projects in the waters of the island this year. Deputy Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Mohd Johari Baharum said the allocation, which was approved by Prime Minister Najib Razak, was an addition to the more than RM400 million (US$130.48 million) provided through the Langkawi Development Authority (Lada) in the earlier 2012 budget. He told this to reporters after officiating the Kedah Fisheries Department's clients day, here on Saturday. Mohd Johari said the ministry has identified three sites for breeding sea cucumber and two sites for trepang. Currently, he said there were 12 fish in cages projects in Langkawi waters. -- BERNAMA
