Lava Flood From Mount Merapi Damage Two Bridges

Magelang, C Java, Dec 26 (ANTARA) - Cold lava floods from Mount Merapi in Central Java province have damaged two bridges in Srumbung and Mungkid sub-districts, according to Merapi Care volunteer Ricky. "The lava floods have washed away the Soropadan bridge and have also damaged an emergency bridge constructed by the local people, paralyzing land transportation," he said here on Tuesday. Ricky noted that the lava floods, which were triggered by incessant downpours at the peak of Mount Merapi, flowed into several rivers such as Bebeng, Putih, Pabelan, Senowo, and Lamat. Therefore, Putih and Pabelan rivers overflowed, which led to flash floods, with floodwaters reaching a height of up to two metres. "It`s for that the first time that lava floods have hit the area during this year`s rainy season," Ricky noted. "More such floods are expected during the peak of the rainy season, in January and February next year,� he added.
