KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian government will sponsor the construction of buildings and purchase of equipment for the Health Science College of the Al-Quds International Institute (QII) in Jerusalem at a cost of US$5 million.
QII head of the Palestine/Lebanon Foreign Relations Committee, Dr Moh'd Akram Al-Adlouni (centre) disclosed this after a meeting with Prime Minister Najib Razak (second from right) at the latter's office in Parliament building, here, Wednesday.
Describing the sponsorship as a remarkable contribution made by the Malaysian people for Palestinians, Dr Moh'd Akram hoped the project would be implemented soon.
"We had a long discussion with the prime minister about the situation of the people in Palestine, especially in Jerusalem. He is very aware of the concerns and sufferings there.
"Besides that, the prime minister promised to share his concerns with his Cabinet and some Malaysians, especially the businessmen, to support building of different schools in Jerusalem because we face shortage of classrooms there," he said.
Earlier, Dr Moh'd Akram, who led a delegation comprising representatives of QII and Al-Quds Foundation South Africa, met with Najib for almost one hour.
Also present at the meeting was Al-Quds Foundation Malaysia chairman, Nasharudin Mat Isa (right).
On Monday, the eight-member delegation, called on Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin in conjunction with the launch of Al-Quds Foundation Malaysia by Muhyiddin in Putrajaya, the same day.
Al-Quds Foundation Malaysia is a welfare foundation for the people of Palestine which, among others, educates society on issues in the troubled state besides assisting the Palestinians.
Dr Moh'd Akram said they also discussed the issue of endowment and the prime minister promised to discuss this with his Cabinet, especially the minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) to study the project.
Meanwhile, Nasharudin, on behalf of Al-Quds International Institution (aka Foundation) based in Beirut and Al-Quds Foundation Malaysia, thanked the prime Minister for the Malaysian government's commitment in sponsoring the buildings for the Health Science College.
He said they would make arrangements soon for the dean of the college to come and receive the cheque.
