Malaysian–Uzbek Friendship Association Formed

By Nabilah Saleh KUALA LUMPUR, March 22 (Bernama) -- The recently formed Malaysian and Uzbekistan Friendship Association (MAUFA) will further enhance the close relationship between the two countries, which commenced diplomatic relations 20 years ago, said Shukur Sabitov, Uzbekistan ambassador to Malaysia. "It is hoped that the establishment of MAUFA will extend the bilateral relations of 20 years (with regard to the) economy, culture and traditions," he said while announcing the establishment of the association at a Navruz celebration, here on Tuesday night. Sabitov and his wife Sanobar Sabitova hosted the event. Navruz, which means "new day of the year," symbolises the beginning of a calendar year in countries such as Iran, Afghanistan, a few regions in Iraq and Turkey, and some Central Asian countries. In Uzbekistan, Navruz is a state holiday. The festival is celebrated every March 21 following traditions where a large variety of meals are served. Navruz lasts for the entire month. Sabitov said the MAUFA is headed by Abdul Halim Ahmad, who is a "highly proactive individual and leader" with many plans to boost the friendship between the citizens of both countries. Abdul Halim, noted that the association, which was inspired by the Uzbekistan ambassador, was approved by the Registrar of Society (ROS) on March 8. "Today, after 20 years of diplomatic relations and many initiatives from both countries, MAUFA will take this relationship to the next level," Abdul Halim stated. Among the diplomats who attended the event were Ukraine Ambassador to Malaysia Ihor V. Humennyi, Russian Ambassador Lyudmila G. Vorobyeva and Palestinian Ambassador Abdelaziz Aboughosh. -- BERNAMA
