Malaysian Students Nearly Attacked After Misunderstanding in Medan

By Ahmad Fuad Yahya JAKARTA, June 28 (Bernama) -- Three Malaysian students were nearly attacked by locals following an argument and misunderstanding after an accident involving a Malaysian student and local man in Medan, Sumatera, at midnight, Tuesday. A group of locals had gathered in front of a clinic where the Malaysian student received treatment but Indonesian police arrived to prevent an untoward incident. Education Malaysia (EM) Indonesia director, Associate Prof Dr Juzhar Jusoh said during the incident, a Faculty of Dentistry student in Universiti Sumatera Utara, Ashwin Kumar was riding a motorcycle when Dion Simaremare, a local, knocked into his motorcycle at Dr Mansyur Street, Medan. Ashwin, who suffered minor injuries had asked Dion to pay compensation but the latter refused to do so, resulting in an argument between the duo. "Earlier, Dion had apologised but the locals who witnessed the incident did not let Ashwin and his colleagues to leave the place, claiming it was Ashwin who was at fault," he said. Ashwin who was taken to the Kg Durian police station and detained with his friends from 2am to 11am, had met the Consulate General of Malaysia in Medan at about 2.30pm on Wednesday, to seek advise on the incident. -- BERNAMA
