Malaysians Can Contribute To Environment Through Sustainable Lifestyle, Says Social Activist

KUCHING (Sarawak, Malaysia), March 31 (Bernama) -- Malaysians can make a significant contribution to slow down and reverse adverse accelerating environmental changes created by an exponentially growing population and rapidly rising standards of living through a more sustainable lifestyle, a social activist said. Ang Lai Soon said that there were no simple short-term solutions to the over-exploitation of resources and environmental destruction but individuals, as communities and as nations, must be united to live in harmony with their environment. "In Malaysia, we can make an immediate significant contribution by using our air conditioning far more sparingly, switching off when not really needed and increasing the temperature setting by a few degrees. "Do whatever we can 365 days a year, not just for only one hour a year. If we have the will and determination, I know we can. That will be everyone's contribution to preserve and protect the environment," he said in his Earth Hour 2012 message. Earth Hour is a worldwide event that is organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, encouraging households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. -- BERNAMA
