Malaysia's MITI to Refine MoU with Guinea - Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) will refine the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with Guinea to strengthen the economic activities between the two countries. Its Minister Mustapa Mohamed said among the matters that will be given attention are details on investment, trade and taxation. "Guinea is rich in natural resources and minerals such as gold and iron ore. The country is also active in oil exploration," he said after receiving the visit by Guinea President Alpha Conde at his ministry, here on Wednesday. Mustapa said the two countries have a special relationship because many of its senior executives including minister had studied at institutions of higher learning in Malaysia. "Malaysia views Guinea as a growing market in the African region and welcomes Guinean and Malaysian businesses to take advantage of the opportunities available in both countries," he said. The visit was held in conjunction with Conde's first official visit to Malaysia from June 26-29. The delegation was accompanied by the Ambassador of Guinea to Kuala Lumpur and comprised the Minister of International Cooperation, Minister of Cooperation, Adviser Ministers, several government officials and representatives from the Guinean private sector. Conde and the delegation visited MITI to learn about the Malaysian government's support in the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and to get an overview on the development of the halal industry. Briefings were presented by representatives from SME Corp Malaysia and Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC). Mustapa informed that SME Corp and HDC are ready to provide the expertise and consultation to create and help to develop SMEs and halal-related industry in Guinea, should it require such assistances. -- BERNAMA
