Mekong communities demand for solution for impacts of neighbouring dams
BANGKOK, October 14 (TNA) - A network of Mekong basin communal bodies in seven provinces in the Thai Northeast, or I-san, has called for solution for hardships of I-san people from impacts of the construction of dams in neighbouring countries.
The civil network said it has conducted a study and found that four dams in China and, probably, another Xayaburi dam planned to be constructed by Laos would pricelessly affect 10 localities in the seven northeastern Thai provinces, especially on the local fishery and agricultural sectors.
Representatives of the network on Friday met Governor of NongKhai province WiratLimsuwat, who promised to forward their demand to the Thai government and other relevant agencies, including the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) and the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), for further consideration and solution.
