Men in Kyrgyzstan to be held accountable for economic violence in family

Bishkek, Oct. 26, 2022. /Kabar/. Men who do not provide for their families will be held accountable in Kyrgyzstan, the participants of the round table in Osh told discussing amendments to the laws on the protection of sexual and gender-based violence in the family.
Deputy of the Kyrgyz Parliament Dinara Ashimova said that, according to statistics, 10,000 women in the country reported about domestic violence. “Some victims do not report their situation. As you can see, violence has increased in the country now. Currently, proposals are being worked out to toughen punishments for rapists,” the deputy said.
The bill proposes that the aggressor in the family leave the place of residence of the victim during the investigation. He is also obliged to undergo explanatory work at his own expense, if this is not possible, he will be involved in community service.
Also, liability will be provided not only for physical violence, but also for moral and economic violence, including those cases when a man forbids his wife to work and does not provide properly.
The organizers of the event note that the bills will undergo public hearings in the regions, after which they will be submitted to parliamentary hearings.
