Msian University Ranks 31st In QS Ranking For Less Than 50 Years of Establishment Category

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) ranks 31st in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rangkings for universities that have been around for less than 50 years. UKM Vice-Chancellor Prof Sharifah Hapsah said the ranking was an international recognition in which UKM was the only local institution to be listed. She said UKM was chosen based on its research, journal production, expertise of its teaching force, and the total number of students involved in each study. "QS asseses from every aspect of scientific studies and new discoveries...and one of the reasons is the research work of UKM's Medical Faculty which has repeatedly come up with high quality discoveries," she told reporters after the launching ceremony of the 40th Anniversary of the Faculty of Medicine in UKM on Wednesday. The ceremony was graced by Yang Dipertuan Besar Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir who is also UKM's Chancellor. The UKM Medical Centre (PPUKM) were the first in the world to perform a keyhole surgery on a baby which was just 14 days old to remove 95 per cent of its pancreas, last August. Sharifah said the ranking showed UKM was an institution which was able to make an impact in journal production or research of any kind although it has been only 42 years since its establishment. "We had always aimed to be in the top 50 and we are committed to continue working towards the top 10 next year for the category of universities under 50 years of establishment," she said. -- BERNAMA
