NEDA co-launches projects to develop water utility in Lao
SAVANNAKHET, Feb 28 (TNA) -- Thailand's Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency, (NEDA) has joined hands with the government of Lao PDR to initiate a water supply development project.
Laos Minister of Public Works and Transport (PWT) Bounchanh Sinthavong, together with NEDA President Newin Sinsiri presided over the official launching ceremony of the water supply development project in five Laos' cities at Laos Xaignabouli city of Savannakhet province.
The project is a collaboration between the governments of Thailand and Lao PDR aimed to develop the water utility system in five Laos cities of Pakbeng, Khob, Houayxay, Xaignabouli, and Khong, in which NEDA has providing a funding of 305 million baht loan and a grant of 5 million baht to be for the constructions of a tap water production facility, raw water management system, and the tap water relay system.
Residents in the five Laotian cities have been living without tap water in the past and had to rely on water from natural water sources and groundwater for consumption.
The cooperation provided by Thailand is believed to be very beneficial and would help improve the economy and society of Lao PDR, as clean water would help lift the living conditions and the quality of lift of the Laos people, while also help to reduce the inequality among ASEAN member states, as well as strengthen bilateral relationships between Thailand and Lao PDR.
