New agreement with Emirates Red Crescent mandates Yemeni government to manage humanitarian aid

ADEN, 6th October, 2015 (WAM) -- The Emirates Red Crescent has signed an agreement mandating the Yemeni government with managing and organising distribution of relief aid to the needy in Yemen, with the Red Crescent as a key partner in the process. Secretary-General of the Emirates Red Crescent, Dr. Ateeq Al Falahi, and Yemeni Minister of Local Administration and head of the High Relief Commission, Abd al-Raqib Fatah, signed the new agreement in the presence of United Arab Emirates' Special Envoy for Yemen, Dr Mubarak Saeed Al Jaberi, and Vice-President and Prime Minister of Yemen, Khaled Bahah. According to the agreement, the Emirates Red Crescent will be involved in supervising the distribution of relief aid to the eligible people in the City of Aden, based on complete information. The humanitarian agency will also participate in the commission's capacity-building programmes for relief workers. Following the signing ceremony, Minister Fatah praised the Emirates Red Crescent for the crucial role it is playing in Yemen in the areas liberated recently. He said it was able to run relief operations in the toughest of the situations, not only in Aden but also in the entire Arab region. He said relief aid will also be distributed to Yemenis in neighbouring governorates as and when the situation improves. In addition to sending the first aid ships to Aden when the city was still under siege by the rebel Houthis, the Emirates Red Crescent helped restore power grids, generated 54 MW of power, and renovated more than 35 schools in a plan covering 154 schools that were damaged. – Emirates News Agency, WAM -http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395286356546.html
