NHRC Deputy Chairman Affirms Qatar's Keenness on Protecting Migrant Workers

Doha, October 09 (QNA) - HE Deputy Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) Dr. Mohammad bin Saif Al Kuwari affirmed the keenness of the State of Qatar on promoting human rights and protecting migrant workers. HE the NHRC Deputy Chairman praised Qatar's efforts in promoting the values of freedom, justice and equality, and spreading the culture of dialogue, peaceful coexistence and the concept of a constitutional civil state, especially in light of its readiness to host the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, pointing in this regard to the Committee's role in protecting and promoting human rights. This came during two meetings with two European human rights delegations - the first was an Italian delegation specialized in legal affairs, while the other was headed by the UK's Migration and Modern Slavery Envoy Andrew Patrick. The meetings touched on topics of joint interest, the role of the NHRC in the protection and promotion of human rights, as well as ideas, experiences and visuals about legal aspects. During the two meetings, Al Kuwari gave a detailed explanation about the role of the National Human Rights Committee and its contributions to the legislative developments in the national laws in the country; as well as its educational role in the field of human rights, promoting tolerance and peace, eliminating racism, racial discrimination and related intolerance, and respecting cultural diversity as a means to prevent racism and racial discrimination. He indicated the Committee’s role in urging the State to join international conventions related to human rights, as well as making recommendations on national legislation related to the protection and promotion of the human rights culture, reviewing comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation and providing advice on it, and making recommendations to the government on the need to implement and apply appropriate and effective legislation to prevent acts of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance. At the conclusion of the two meetings, the members of the delegations expressed their thanks and appreciation to the National Human Rights Committee for its growing role, and their desire to exchange information, suggestions and experiences related to human rights. Meanwhile, the directors of the various departments of the National Human Rights Committee shed light on the most important competencies and tasks of their departments in order to achieve the goals and mission of the Committee in establishing a human rights culture among members of the society and state institutions.
