NIHR holds workshop on SDGs

Manama, Feb. 26 (BNA): The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has organised a workshop for the members of the Council of Commissioners and Secretariat-General on sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the necessary indicators to follow up on them.
Presented by international human rights expert, Professor Chris Sidoti, the workshop highlighted the SDGs adopted by the UN, and the pivotal role to be played by the national human rights institutions in achieving them.
The workshop aimed to inform the participants about the 17 SDGs adopted by the UN for 2030, and the potential challenges that may face the progress made so far in this regard.
It also focused on the best means to support such strategic development goals.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations. The broad goals are interrelated though each has its own targets to achieve. The total number of targets is 169.
SDGs cover a broad range of social and economic development issues, including poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, gender equality, water, sanitation, energy, environment and social justice.
The SDGs are also known as "Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" or 2030 Agenda in short.
The goals were developed to replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which ended in 2015.
