NIHR praises Bahrain's advanced press

Manama, May 2 (BNA): Marking the World Press Freedom Day, which is observed on May 3, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) praised the advanced level of Bahrain press, stressing the climate of freedom and transparency in which the journalists and media persons are exercising their right in getting information within the framework of the state of institutions and law. It pointed out respecting the supreme interest of the nation and citizens and adhering to the professional and ethical criteria as stipulated by article 23 of Bahrain constitution that says: "Freedom of opinion and scientific research is guaranteed. Everyone has the rights to express his opinion and publish it by word of mouth, in writing and otherwise under the rules and conditions laid down by, law provided that the fundamental beliefs of Islamic doctrine are not infringed, the unity of the people is not prejudiced and discord or sectarianism is not aroused. Given the essential and effective role of the press in influencing the public opinion through new kinds of media tools which imposed themselves on the scene, the NIHR called for more commitment to professional responsibility and boosting the culture of self-control while exercising the profession. It also lauded the climate of freedom and openness in Bahrain, stressing that it is working according to its prerogatives stipulated by the law of its establishment on monitoring the extent of commitment to the international conventions and covenants signed by Bahrain on protecting the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
