Observer: Industrialization Need in Villages
Jakarta, Aug 22 (ANTARA) - A social and political researcher has stated that Indonesian villages must be industrialized in order to stop the flow of migrants to the capital city of Jakarta.
"Uncontrolled urbanization in Jakarta is mainly due to the lack of development in villages, said Fachri Ali, a researcher from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), here on Tuesday.
"Industrialization is needed in villages so money will flow into these places. Right now, there is no money in villages, so it is very difficult to earn Rp100,000," he added.
Fachri explained that if villages were industrialised and developed, locals would not have to flock to Jakarta in search of jobs.
"At present, people go to Jakarta because it is easier to make money there. Urbanization in Jakarta cannot be controlled by the Jakarta administration but by the national government. People should not be blamed for going to Jakarta because they have to make money for a living and also pay for their children`s schooling, among other things," he pointed out.
The development of Indonesias villages must be the national governments top priority. Also, the urbanisation problem must be solved by the National Development Planning Board, as the Jakarta provincial government will not be able to overcome it," Fachri said.
Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo advised all Indonesian job seekers against coming to the capital city, unless they had the required skills and qualifications.
"Jakarta is not a closed city, but newcomers wishing to make a living here must have the required skills so they do not become a burden," he said on Monday.
Many job seekers across the country are expected would arrive at the city after Id-ul-Fitr, along with their friends or relatives who visited their home villages during the holidays.
Fauzi also called on the job seekers to meet the citys residential requirements so that they do not face problems later.
"After Id, we will carry out operations during which people who do not meet the citys residential rules will be sent back to their home villages," he said.
