OIC Condems Massacre in Hama, Syria

KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Bernama) -- The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly condemned the heinous massacre that took place in Traimseh village of the Hama province, Syria on Thursday, which has resulted in injuries and the deaths of hundreds of unarmed civilians. OIC secretary-general Prof Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said that the 57-member organisation also condemned the perpetuation of such massacres targeting the Syrian people, especially since the holy month of Ramadan was approaching. In a statement, he reiterated his call to the Security Council to take urgent actions under the United Nations (UN) Charter to stop the bloodshed in Syria and protect the Syrian people. Protests in Syria have escalated into what some are calling a burgeoning civil war. According to the UN, several thousand people have died since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began in March 2011. -- BERNAMA
