Ombudsman receives UK Prime Minister’s Special Representative, UK Deputy Ambassador

Manama, Feb. 14 (BNA): Ombudsman Nawaf Mohammed Al Maawda received the Prime Minister’s Special Representative and the Minister of State for South and Central Asia, United Nations, and the Commonwealth at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Lord Tariq Ahmed and UK Deputy Ambassador to Bahrain Stuart Summers.
Al Maawda affirmed the Ombudsman’s keenness to consolidate international cooperation with diplomatic institutions, bodies and missions concerned with their fields of work.
Lord Ahmed was briefed on the Ombudsman’s efforts to promote human rights principles with relevant authorities, especially in the Interior Ministry regarding dealing with inmates and expansion the application of alternative measures and penalties and their impact on the convict, his family and society as a whole, in addition to initiating a study of implementing open prisons that aligns with international standards applied in developed countries.
The Ombudsman highlighted the efforts of the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission in monitoring reform and rehabilitation centers, detention centers, juvenile and detainees care centers and other places.
