Parliament backs judiciary, urges national unity

Manama, June 15 (BNA): The Council of Representatives backed the judiciary measures to protect the reform project led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa. In a statement issued today, it supported the bold steps to protect Bahrain’s security and stability, safeguard rights and liberties and deter attempts to mar the atmosphere of freedom, justice and political openness. The statement defended the independence, sovereignty and probity of Bahrain’s judiciary, backing its resolutions which aim to protect national security and stability. "The constitution and law put the national interest above all considerations and guarantee all people’s rights and duties without any discrimination", the statement said. It backed the court decision to shut down Al-Wefaq Society headquarters, suspend its activities and freeze its assets, and said that the association sought to use religion and politics as a mere cover to promote terrorism, violence and terrorise innocent people. It slammed Al-Wefaq for discrediting the law, denigrating peaceful co-existence and tolerance, disrespecting others and urging external sides to interfere in Bahrain’s internal affairs and encroach on its national sovereignty. Regarding the inquiry launched by the Public Prosecution into the involvement of Al-Resala and Islamic Enlightenment Societies and Yaqeen Library into illegal fundraising and money laundering, the Council of Representatives urged deterrent measures to root out such criminal activities. The statement warned against the sectarian and terror-tainted mantra advocated by Al-Wefaq and other groups which seek to subvert Bahrain’s security and stability, aided and abetted by foreign sides which are preying on the nation. The statement rejected the statements and deeds of these subversive groups which are affiliated with internal and external political and religious sides and agendas. The Council of Representatives backed all measures to protect Bahrain’s security and stability and deter attempts to drive wedges, subvert national unity and threaten social fabric. "The current regional volatile situation makes it necessary for the authorities to enforce the law, as per the constitution and legislative provisions", the statement said, stressing the necessity of protecting Bahrain’s democratic strides. The council stressed keenness on protecting people’s safety and preserving rights and liberties against desperate attempts to sow divisions between social segments and subvert unity. It urged all parties to the political process to commit to the law provisions and heed Bahrain’s vital interests above all other consideration. "Bahrain will never be a ground for those who seek to fuel sectarian strife and foment terror-infested ideas", the council said, stressing the ability of the authorities in Bahrain to maintain security and stability. The council condemned blatant foreign interference in Bahrain’s internal affairs and infringement upon its sovereign and independent judiciary. "Bahrain is well able to protect its gains and democratic achievements in an atmosphere of political openness", the council said, paying tribute to the wise leadership.
