Qatar Participates in 27th Meeting of General Conference on Weights and Measures

Paris, November 16 (QNA) - The State of Qatar participated in the 27th meeting of the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM), which is held at Versailles Palais des Congres, France, from Nov. 15 to 18.
HE Chairperson of Qatar General Organization for Standards and Metrology Eng. Mohammed bin Saud Mohammed Al Musallam represented the State of Qatar at the conference, among other delegations representing more than a hundred countries.
The CGPM is the legislative arm of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures, which is an international scientific organization established by The Metre Convention signed in Paris in 1875, to coordinate international standards for metrology, develop the metric system, and preserve the international system of units.
The conference discusses over four days many technical and scientific issues and reports submitted by the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance: Metrology in Chemistry and Biology, Consultative Committee for Photometry and Radiometry, Consultative Committee for Thermometry, Consultative Committee for Ionizing Radiation, and other scientific and technical committees. Additionally, the conference reviews the working papers submitted by the participating international organizations including the World Meteorological Organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the International Organization for Standardization.
The conference will address vital topics on the international scene, including the role of time and frequency metrology in space missions, metrology in monitoring accuracy, metrology for accurate satellite-based observations of climate variables, and accurate diagnostics as part of metrology readiness for potential future pandemic events. In addition, the participants review and approve the International Bureau of Weights and Measures plan for 2024-2027, which covers several areas, including physical measures, time measures, and chemical measures.
Among the most prominent decisions presented to the conference for adoption are a draft resolution on redefining the second, the future use and development of universal time, and expanding the field of symbols that precede the international system of units. (QNA)
