Salehi: UN should provide necessary welfare for honorable repatriation of refugees

Tehran, Sept 16, IRNA – Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said on Saturday that the UN refugee agency is expected to take measures for providing necessary facilities for the honorable repatriation of the refugees and their welfare. In a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, he recalled Iran’s well reception of the Afghan and Iraqi refugees in the event of the US-led invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and Iranian generous contribution to the humanitarian crisis. “We expect United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to support Iran’s humanitarian measures to provided better services to the refugees,” he said. Guterres, for his part, appreciated Iran for its reception of the refugees and described it as the second country hosting the largest number of refugees. They enjoy suitable welfare, sanitary services and educational facilities in Iran, he noted.
