SCW honours GPIC's environmental engineer
Manama, Dec. 12 (BNA): Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Supreme Supervisory Committee for Bahrain Women's Day, Shaikh Khalid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, has honoured Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) Environmental Engineer Reem Al Bastaki.
This came on behalf of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) on the Bahraini Women’s Day dedicated this year to women in the fields of engineering.
GPIC President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery spoke about the importance of environmental engineering said it contributes directly to saving water. He said the future will witness a lot of technical development coinciding with the growth of population and will require more food for the growing population as well as housing. He said areas that that need management to avoid pollution or environmental damage is increasing as a result of the emergence of new pollutants and the consequences of climate change. All these issues would require more specialized environmental engineers to help deal with potential problems.
Dr. Jawahery congratulated Al Bastaki for the recognition, which comes as part of Her Royal Highness's appreciation to the women cadres in rare and new specialties. He said this encourages women to engage in more new disciplines needed by different sectors, especially since Bahraini women love of science and are ambitious.
He said that the company is always proactive in attracting the people of rare specialties which will contribute to the advancement and development of various aspects of the company's work. He said the specialization of environmental engineering will support the operational processes, pointing to the complementary relationship between this relatively new specialty and some branches of chemical engineering.
He expressed his great pride in the presence of Al Bastaki as a member of the company's active team, stressing the company would benefit from her experience.
He said the company pays particular attention to its specialized engineers and is keen to encourage them to receive the latest scientific knowledge and training.
He added women engineers have been able to cope with the challenges of work and had taken advantage of all the opportunities offered by the company for training and advancement.
Dr. Jawahery praised the continuous efforts of Her Royal Highness to protect and sponsor Bahraini women in all fields and said the Bahraini Women’s Day is more than an annual celebration but an activity that highlighted ways and means to renew the status of women in all areas.
Al Bastaki thanked HRH Princess Sabeeka for her efforts to sponsor women, empower and celebrate them. She also thanked Dr. Jawahery for choosing her to receive the honour. She spoke of the care shown by the company's Management to provide an ideal environment for work and training for all members, especially female employees.
Al Bastaki has a bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering with honours from Griffith University in Australia.
This new engineering specialization contributes to providing safe drinking water, solid waste treatment and disposal, cleaning contaminated sites and maintaining air and water quality.
More than 80 leading engineers in various fields have been honoured on the occasion this year. They have contributed to the establishment and management of engineering offices, various engineering disciplines and sustainability in the profession as well as in specialized engineering disciplines.
