Songkran revelers enjoy water splashing across Thailand

BANGKOK, April 14 (TNA) -- Songkran revelers enjoy water splashing across Thailand as celebration in some venues is toned down with tidier regulations. Silom Road and Khaosan Road remain popular venues for water wars; the roads are closed to allow revelers from noon to 8 pm until Saturday. Authorities are enforcing bans on alcohol, talcum powder and high-pressure water guns in those areas. To make celebrations more sober and tidier as the country continues to mourn the late HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is taking measures to prohibit loud music and some other activities. Besides Silom, five other roads in Bangkok -- Khao San, Chakkrabhong, Bowornniwet, Sib Sam Hang, Tanao -- are also closed to traffic to make way for Songkran celebrations. They are all designated “Safety Songkran Zones” where the BMA seeks cooperation from event organizers and the public to refrain from certain activities. In Chiang Mai, water splashing fun is in full swing around the moat surrounding the old city area. Tourists both Thais and foreigners mingled with the locals of one of the most popular locations for the Thai traditional New Year celebration. A parade of beauty queen near the Three Kings Monument was the highlight of Songkran Day morning, displaying the culture of Lanna civilization. Chiang Mai city draws a number of tourists during Songkran every year as city administration is enforcing tougher measures to prevent road accidents and alcohol-related crimes. (TNA)
