Special Investigation Unit organises conference on human rights

Manama, Oct. 13 (BNA): The Public Prosecution's Special Investigation Unit organised today a conference under the theme "Protecting Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System", The two-day event, held in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to cast light on the national efforts to promote human rights in light of international standards. Attorney General Dr. Ali bin Fadhel Al Buainin said the conference is an opportunity to shed light on the kingdom's efforts to foster human rights in its legislative and institutional system. He added human rights, which are guaranteed by the law and constitution, are the basis of the legitimacy of the state's action towards the community and individuals. He also pointed out the kingdom's active role in the international community and the crucial steps taken in this respect by joining international agreements and covenants. He also underlined Bahrain's tremendous efforts to set up strong monitoring institutions and independent authorities with full accountability power like the Special Investigation Unit, the Ombudsman's Office, the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission, the National Institution for Human Rights as well as human rights committees and specialised councils. On his part, the UN Resident Coordinator to Bahrain Stefano Pettinato underscored progress of the Special Investigation Unit's work since starting cooperation with UNDP. He noted the unit's contribution to boosting best international practices and creating continuous development of capabilities. He also pointed out that protecting human rights in the criminal justice system contributes to progress towards achieving goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which is peace, justice and strong institutions.
